Kashi to Get India’s First Urban Ropeway, Promising Faster and Eco-Friendly Travel
Varanasi: In a major boost to urban mobility and heritage-friendly infrastructure, Varanasi is set to become home to India’s first public transport urban ropeway, a project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving daily commute in the ancient city.
The ambitious project is being implemented by the Central Government through National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), with active support from the Uttar Pradesh Government. Once operational, the ropeway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between key areas while offering a safe, sustainable, and modern mode of transport.
The ropeway will operate along a 3.7-kilometre corridor connecting Varanasi Cantonment (Cantt) to Godowlia, one of the city’s busiest commercial and tourist zones. Equipped with 10-passenger gondolas, the system will provide high-frequency services, enabling the smooth movement of thousands of commuters daily.
Officials stated that the project has been designed to address the city’s narrow roads and heavy traffic, especially in core areas where conventional road expansion is not feasible. By allowing commuters to travel above congested streets, the ropeway will help reduce vehicular emissions, fuel consumption, and travel-related stress.
Beyond improving daily commuting, the ropeway is also expected to enhance the experience of tourists visiting Varanasi. With reduced traffic pressure, visitors will be able to enjoy the city’s iconic ghats, markets, and cultural landmarks more comfortably.
The project represents a blend of modern urban transport technology with the timeless heritage of Kashi, setting a precedent for similar solutions in other historic and densely populated Indian cities.
Once completed, the ropeway is expected to redefine urban mobility in Varanasi, making travel faster, cleaner, and more efficient while preserving the city’s unique character.
