India Launches First Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Buses in Leh, Marks Major Clean Energy Milestone
Leh (Ladakh): In a historic step toward sustainable transportation, India has successfully launched its first hydrogen fuel-cell buses in Leh, Ladakh, demonstrating that clean mobility solutions can operate even in extreme high-altitude and cold-weather conditions.
The initiative marks a major breakthrough under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, reinforcing India’s commitment to achieving its Net Zero emissions targets. These hydrogen-powered buses are designed to function efficiently in sub-zero temperatures and challenging terrain, making Ladakh an ideal testing ground for next-generation clean transport technology.
The buses run on green hydrogen produced locally, ensuring a completely clean energy cycle. The only emission from the vehicles is water vapour, making them a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered public transport.
Officials involved in the project stated that the successful deployment proves the viability of hydrogen-based mobility solutions in some of the world’s harshest climatic conditions. This development opens new possibilities for expanding clean public transport across other regions of the country.
The project also aligns with national initiatives such as Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and India’s broader energy transition strategy, positioning the country as a global leader in hydrogen technology and climate-friendly innovation.
Experts believe that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles could play a crucial role in decarbonizing the transport sector, especially for long-distance and heavy-duty applications where battery-based solutions face limitations.
