Supreme Court Allows Traditional Bull Races in Karnataka

New Delhi | March 11, 2026:
The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a petition filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) challenging traditional bull-racing events such as Kambala in Karnataka.

With the dismissal of the petition, the court has allowed the centuries-old traditional sport to continue under the existing legal framework and regulations established by the state government.

Kambala, a popular rural sport primarily held in the coastal districts of Karnataka, involves pairs of bulls racing through slushy paddy fields while guided by farmers. The event is widely regarded as a cultural and community celebration and attracts thousands of spectators every year.

Animal rights organizations had challenged the practice, raising concerns about the treatment of animals during the races. However, supporters of the tradition argue that the sport is an integral part of local culture and rural heritage.

With the latest decision, the Supreme Court has effectively cleared the way for the continuation of Kambala events in Karnataka, provided they comply with the regulatory safeguards already in place to ensure the welfare of animals and the safety of participants.
