Rising Costs Push Tech Professionals Out of Bengaluru, Tier-2 Cities Gain Popularity
Bengaluru: Once celebrated as India’s Silicon Valley, Bengaluru is increasingly witnessing an outward migration of tech professionals driven by high living costs, traffic congestion, and mounting daily expenses. As affordability becomes a growing concern, many employees in the IT sector are relocating to Tier-2 cities such as Mysuru, Pune, and Hyderabad in search of a calmer and more economical lifestyle.
High Rents and Expenses Trigger Exit
Several residents cite exorbitant rental prices and long commute hours as primary reasons for leaving the city. Experiences shared on online platforms reveal that for many newcomers, savings become nearly impossible after accounting for rent, food, and transportation. One professional reportedly resigned from a Bengaluru-based job within three months, choosing to move to a more affordable city like Kolkata.
Mysuru Emerges as a Strong Alternative
The Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway has played a significant role in reshaping residential preferences. Mysuru, in particular, has emerged as a favored destination due to property prices that are 30–50 percent lower than Bengaluru’s, along with shorter commute times and reduced congestion. Industry observers describe this trend as a “techie migration” toward Tier-2 cities offering better work-life balance.
Bengaluru Still Holds Emotional Appeal
Despite these challenges, Bengaluru continues to retain a loyal segment of professionals who choose to stay or even return after exploring other cities. Many acknowledge initial struggles but describe the city as welcoming once they adapt to its pace. One returnee famously likened their Bengaluru experience to a “warm hug,” highlighting the city’s emotional pull.
According to such residents, Bengaluru’s vast career opportunities, thriving startup ecosystem, and vibrant cultural life often outweigh its drawbacks, making it preferable to other metros like Delhi or Hyderabad.
A City at a Crossroads
As Bengaluru grapples with infrastructure strain and rising costs, its future may depend on how effectively these challenges are addressed. While Tier-2 cities gain momentum, the city’s unique blend of opportunity and culture continues to keep it relevant in India’s tech landscape.
