Proposal to Rename Delhi as ‘Indraprastha’ Sparks Fresh Political Debate

New Delhi: A fresh political discussion has emerged after BJP Member of Parliament Praveen Khandelwal wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, proposing that the national capital Delhi be renamed as “Indraprastha.” The proposal has triggered debate across political and public circles, though no official decision has been taken so far.

In his letter, the BJP MP stated that the name Indraprastha reflects Delhi’s ancient heritage and civilisational identity, as mentioned in Indian historical texts. He argued that restoring the historic name would honour India’s cultural roots and reconnect the capital with its deep mythological and historical past.

Indraprastha is believed to be the ancient city mentioned in the Mahabharata, associated with the Pandavas, and is often cited as one of the earliest settlements in the region that later evolved into modern-day Delhi.

The proposal has sparked mixed reactions. While some have welcomed the idea, calling it a step towards reclaiming India’s historical identity, others have urged caution, pointing out the administrative, legal, and social implications of renaming a capital city.

Political observers note that the issue adds to the broader national conversation around heritage, history, and place-name changes, which have been discussed in various parts of the country in recent years.
As of now, the Union Home Ministry has not issued any official response, and there has been no confirmation on whether the proposal will be taken up for formal consideration.

The debate continues, with public opinion divided, as Delhi’s historical legacy once again finds itself at the centre of political discourse.
