Indian Tankers Safely Transit Strait of Hormuz Amid Iran–Israel Tensions
March 12, 2026 – Middle East / New Delhi Desk:
In the midst of escalating Iran–Israel tensions, the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s critical “oil choke point,” has become an extremely hazardous maritime zone, with most countries’ vessels facing serious transit restrictions.
However, Indian-flagged tankers “Pushpak” and “Parimal” successfully passed through the strait, thanks to special transit clearance granted by Iran, a move that has drawn global attention.
Officials say this rare exception underscores India’s growing diplomatic influence, as countries including the United States continue to face navigation constraints in the region.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar played a pivotal role in securing the clearance, following high-level talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The safe passage also strengthens India’s energy security, ensuring uninterrupted supply of crude oil and LPG.
Diplomats highlight that the development positions India as a trusted global partner and a formidable diplomatic power, sending a clear message: India’s strategic and energy interests are firmly safeguarded.
