India Assumes BRICS Presidency from Brazil, to Host 18th Summit in 2026

New Delhi: India has formally taken over the presidency of BRICS from Brazil, effective January 1, 2026. The development marks a significant milestone as this is the first time India is leading the grouping in its expanded format comprising 10 full member nations.
The expanded BRICS bloc now includes Russia, India, China, South Africa, along with new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.
As the chair, India will host the 18th BRICS Summit later in 2026, which is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among emerging economies and addressing global challenges from the perspective of the developing world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has outlined a people-centric vision for India’s BRICS presidency. The approach aims to support developing and emerging nations through the use of advanced technology, enhanced digital connectivity and the promotion of fairer and more inclusive international systems.
India’s leadership is expected to prioritise giving a stronger voice to smaller and emerging countries on the global stage, reinforcing BRICS as a platform for cooperation, development and multilateral reform.
The assumption of the BRICS presidency further underlines India’s growing role in shaping global economic and political discourse.
