First BRICS Sherpa Meeting Begins in New Delhi; India Outlines Chairship Priorities
New Delhi, February 11: The first BRICS Sherpa Meeting under India’s Chairship commenced in New Delhi yesterday, marking the beginning of a series of engagements scheduled during India’s presidency of the grouping this year.
Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs and India’s BRICS Sherpa, Sudhakar Dalela, highlighted the key priorities of India’s Chairship, drawing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a people-centric and humanity-first approach. He emphasized that India’s agenda will focus on strengthening cooperation among member nations while addressing global challenges through inclusive and sustainable strategies.
During the meeting, Mr. Dalela underlined the overarching theme of India’s Chairship Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability. The theme reflects India’s intent to promote stronger economic partnerships, encourage innovation-led growth, enhance collective resilience against global uncertainties, and advance sustainable development goals within the BRICS framework.
India assumes the BRICS Chairship for the fourth time this year, having previously led the grouping in 2012, 2016, and 2021. Officials noted that India’s leadership will seek to deepen collaboration across key sectors, including economic development, climate action, technology, and multilateral reform.
The meeting brings together Sherpas and senior officials from BRICS member countries to deliberate on priorities and set the course for ministerial and leaders’ engagements planned during the year.
