Education Department Issues Notices to Teachers Over School Merger Resistance
Bengaluru | March 11, 2026:
The Karnataka School Education Department has issued show-cause notices to several teachers following reports of resistance by students to the proposed merger of certain schools into magnet schools in parts of Karnataka.
According to officials, the notices were served after authorities received information that some teachers had allegedly supported or encouraged protests against the merger plan. The department has asked the teachers concerned to explain their role in the matter.
Education authorities stated that the merger initiative is part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at improving the quality of education by creating magnet schools, which are designed to provide better infrastructure, specialized teaching, and enhanced academic opportunities for students.
However, the proposal has sparked concern among some students and parents, who fear that merging smaller schools into larger institutions may create difficulties related to travel and access.
Officials from the department emphasized that the restructuring plan is intended to strengthen the education system across the state and ensure that students receive improved facilities and learning environments. The department is currently reviewing responses from the teachers who were issued notices and will take further action based on their explanations.
