Addressing a press conference, Annamalai paid tribute to Balasaheb Thackeray and said he keeps a photograph of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in his office as a mark of respect.
Responding to threats reportedly published in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana, which warned of “cutting off his leg” should he enter Mumbai, Annamalai dismissed the intimidation outright.
“I will enter Mumbai. Do whatever you can,” he declared.

On the controversy surrounding his remark calling Mumbai the “capital of the world,” Annamalai clarified that the statement was not an insult but a tribute to the relentless hard work and global contributions of Maharashtrians.
He further stressed that national leadership does not erase regional identity, citing examples such as Narendra Modi, who remains Gujarati, and K. Kamaraj, who remained rooted in Tamil identity even while shaping national politics.
