AI-Powered Traffic Cameras Installed in Chamarajanagar to Curb Violations
Chamarajanagar, Feb. 13: In a major step towards strengthening road safety and modernising traffic enforcement, the Chamarajanagar District Police have installed AI-powered surveillance cameras at key junctions across Chamarajanagar district.
The newly deployed system uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) integrated with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to detect traffic violations in real time. Officials said the cameras are capable of identifying offences such as signal jumping, over-speeding, triple riding, riding without helmets, and driving without seatbelts.
Once a violation is recorded, the system automatically captures photographic and video evidence, scans the vehicle’s registration number, and generates an e-challan. The fine is then sent directly to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner, ensuring swift and transparent enforcement.
Police sources stated that the cameras have been strategically installed at major traffic intersections and accident-prone areas in the district. The initiative aims not only to penalise offenders but also to act as a deterrent against reckless driving and habitual violations.
Speaking on the development, district police officials said the move would reduce dependence on manual monitoring and bring greater efficiency and accountability to traffic management. “The objective is to promote responsible driving habits and prevent accidents. Strict enforcement will ultimately save lives,” an official remarked.
Authorities have also assured that the collected data will be used strictly for traffic regulation and law enforcement purposes, with necessary safeguards in place to protect public privacy.
Residents have largely welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that stricter monitoring will help reduce accidents and improve discipline on the roads. However, some citizens have urged authorities to ensure accuracy in fine generation and provide a clear grievance redressal mechanism.
With the introduction of AI-driven traffic monitoring, Chamarajanagar district joins the growing list of regions adopting smart policing measures to enhance public safety and ensure compliance with traffic rules.
