Sagara: Opposition is continuing to grow across Besur and nearby villages in Sagara taluk over the proposed nuclear power project planned near the Sharavathi backwaters. Local residents, environmental activists, farmers, and community organisations have intensified protests, expressing serious concerns regarding environmental safety, ecological damage, and possible displacement of families living in the surrounding region.

Villagers participating in the demonstrations stated that the Sharavathi backwater region is environmentally sensitive and plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the Malnad belt. Protesters fear that the establishment of a nuclear facility could affect water resources, agriculture, biodiversity, and the long-term sustainability of local livelihoods dependent on farming, fishing, and forest-based activities.

One of the major concerns raised by local communities is the possibility of land acquisition and displacement. Residents allege that uncertainty surrounding rehabilitation measures and future compensation has created anxiety among families residing in the affected areas. Several local groups have demanded complete transparency from authorities regarding the project’s environmental impact assessment, safety mechanisms, and rehabilitation policies.

Environmental organisations have also joined the movement, warning that any large-scale industrial or nuclear project near the Sharavathi ecosystem could have irreversible consequences on forests, wildlife habitats, and water systems in the region. Activists are reportedly planning larger public demonstrations and awareness campaigns in the coming weeks to mobilise wider public support against the proposal.

The issue has now emerged as one of the most discussed topics in Sagara taluk, with political leaders, environmental experts, and citizens closely watching future developments. Authorities have not yet issued a detailed public clarification regarding the concerns raised by protesters, while discussions surrounding the project continue to intensify across the district.
