94-Year-Old Scholar Loses ₹5 Crore in Major Cyber Fraud in Bengaluru

Bengaluru | March 11, 2026:
In a shocking case of cybercrime, a 94-year-old research scholar in Bengaluru has reportedly lost nearly ₹5 crore to online fraudsters over a period of about 69 days, raising concerns about the growing threat of cyber scams targeting elderly citizens.

According to police officials, the fraudsters allegedly contacted the victim and manipulated him through a series of communications, convincing him to transfer large sums of money through multiple bank transactions. The scammers reportedly used deceptive tactics and false claims to gain the scholar’s trust before persuading him to move the funds.

Investigators said the victim gradually transferred the money to several accounts provided by the fraudsters, believing the requests were legitimate. The fraud came to light after the scholar realized he had been deceived and reported the matter to authorities.

Police in Bengaluru have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the suspects involved in the scam. Officials are currently tracking the bank accounts used in the transactions and working to identify the individuals behind the cyber fraud.

Authorities have also urged the public, particularly senior citizens, to remain cautious about suspicious phone calls, emails, or online messages requesting financial transactions, and to verify such requests before transferring money.
