US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship Near Sri Lanka

Colombo | March 5:

An Iranian naval frigate, IRIS Dena, was sunk in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka after a strike by a US Navy attack submarine, marking a rare and dramatic escalation in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.

According to US officials, the submarine fired an MK‑48 heavyweight torpedo at the vessel while it was operating in international waters south of Sri Lanka. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the strike as a significant blow to Iran’s naval capabilities.

Sri Lankan authorities said the frigate sank about 40 nautical miles south of Galle after sending a distress call early Thursday morning. Rescue operations were launched by the Sri Lankan Navy, and dozens of sailors were pulled from the sea, while several fatalities have been reported.

Officials said the warship had around 180 crew members on board at the time of the attack. Search and rescue efforts are continuing in the area.

The incident is being described as one of the most serious naval confrontations in the widening US-Iran conflict, bringing military action into the wider Indian Ocean region. It is also believed to be the first time since World War II that a US submarine has destroyed an enemy warship using a torpedo.
