Bharat Ratna for Savarkar Would Enhance the Honour’s Prestige: Mohan Bhagwat

Mumbai: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has made remarks strengthening the demand to confer India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, on V.D. Savarkar. Speaking at a programme in Mumbai, Bhagwat said that if Savarkar is awarded the Bharat Ratna, it would enhance the prestige of the honour itself. He added that Savarkar continues to live in the hearts of the people.

Mohan Bhagwat also spoke about the challenges faced by the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. He stated that there are approximately 12.5 million Hindus in Bangladesh and that if they decide to stay there and continue their struggle, Hindus across the world would support them.

He further said that anyone, irrespective of religion, can become the head of the RSS. Belonging to the SC or ST communities is not a disqualification, just as belonging to the Brahmin community is not a qualification. Although the organisation began with Brahmins, it now works for people of all castes, he added.

Clarifying the organisation’s stance, Bhagwat said the RSS is not against anyone and does not seek power. The sole objective of the RSS, he said, is to unite society.
