Woman Awarded ₹9.1 Lakh Compensation for Missing Entrance Exam Due to Train Delay

Lucknow: In a significant ruling highlighting passenger rights, a district consumer commission has awarded ₹9.1 lakh as compensation to a young woman after a delayed train prevented her from appearing in a crucial entrance examination in 2018. The commission held the Indian Railways accountable for the delay, which ultimately affected her academic future.

According to the case details, the woman was travelling to Lucknow to appear for the BSc Biotechnology entrance examination at Lucknow University. However, the train she was travelling on was delayed by nearly two-and-a-half hours, causing her to miss the examination despite her timely planning and valid ticket.

The consumer commission observed that the delay amounted to deficiency in service on the part of the Railways. It noted that missing the examination had serious consequences for the student, including the loss of an academic year and mental distress. Taking these factors into account, the commission directed the Railways to pay ₹9.1 lakh as compensation for the loss of career opportunity, mental agony, and litigation expenses.

The ruling has been widely seen as a landmark decision reinforcing the accountability of public service providers and offering relief to passengers who suffer due to negligence. Legal experts believe the judgment may encourage more consumers to seek redressal in cases of service lapses by government agencies.
