Growing Support for Revival of Gurukul Education System in India
New Delhi: A renewed national discussion has emerged around the revival of India’s ancient Gurukul education system, following claims from a recent survey suggesting that nearly 90 percent of Hindus support reintroducing Gurukul-based learning in the country.
The Gurukul system, which dates back thousands of years, is widely regarded as the foundation of India’s traditional education. Unlike modern exam-centric schooling, Gurukuls emphasized holistic development, focusing on character building, moral values, discipline, self-reliance, and spiritual wisdom alongside academic learning.
Educationists and cultural thinkers believe that the Gurukul model nurtured students not only to gain knowledge but also to live responsibly, practice righteousness (dharma), respect nature, and serve society. Under the close guidance of a guru, students learned life skills, patriotism, social harmony, and ethical conduct—qualities many feel are increasingly missing in today’s education system.
Supporters of the revival argue that integrating Vedic values with modern scientific and technological education could empower India’s youth to face global challenges while remaining rooted in their cultural identity. They see this as a step toward restoring India’s status as a Vishwaguru, a global leader in knowledge and wisdom.
In recent years, several organizations and state initiatives have begun experimenting with Gurukul-inspired models, blending traditional teachings with contemporary curricula. Advocates believe that such efforts, if scaled responsibly, could help address concerns around declining values, mental well-being, and ethical leadership among the younger generation.
While experts emphasize the need for modernization and inclusivity, the growing public interest highlights a broader desire to reconnect with India’s civilizational heritage through education. The debate continues as policymakers, educators, and communities explore how ancient wisdom can coexist with modern educational demands.
