President Murmu Welcomes Successful Conclusion of Historic India–EU Free Trade Agreement
New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday expressed happiness over the successful conclusion of the historic negotiations on the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), stating that the deal will bring significant positive changes to the lives of people on both sides.
Addressing a banquet hosted in honour of President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Murmu said the agreement reflects the collective aspiration of India and the European Union to shape a stable, balanced and rules-based international order.
The President underlined that India and Europe are connected not only by contemporary interests, but also by shared values such as democracy, pluralism and an open market economy. She noted that economic cooperation remains a key pillar of India–European Union relations, with both sides viewing trade and investment as important instruments for shared prosperity and social progress.
Highlighting the growing strategic engagement, President Murmu said the India–EU Security and Defence Partnership, concluded during the visit, will open new opportunities for defence industries and enhance collaboration in the security domain.
She further said that India is keen to strengthen cooperation with the European Union in areas such as clean energy, climate finance and sustainable technologies, emphasising that joint efforts in these fields will contribute to global sustainability goals.
The visit of the European leaders, she added, marks an important milestone in deepening the comprehensive partnership between India and the European Union.
